When an Xbox 360 gets three red lights around the power button this is called the red ring of death. Some signs that you may be directed to the dreaded RROD are:

1. Freeze-ups (screen weird graphics problems)

2. The sound frozen or static-like sound

3. The only console answer you get is when I turn on / off button

4. You can also get a message saying that the disk is illegible.

These things will happen more and more often until the RROD occurs and is not going away. Do not confuse the RROD (three red light error), with four lights red (the console does not detect that the AV cable is connected).

If you have three red light error and the console is still under warranty contact with Microsoft 1-800-4MYXBOX. It will provide information about how to get your Xbox 360 repaired. However, if your console is not under warranty options are limited. Be very careful of the various "assumptions" arrangements that are offered online. Some of these fixes are dangerous and can result in fires or electrocution.
